LiDAR adoption into ADAS and autonomous vehicles has driven coatings innovation to improve LiDAR reflectivity. However, reflectivity data from integrated sphere, bidirectional reflectance distribution function, and LiDAR measurement do not directly correlate. A practical method to measure the angular dependence of aspecular, near opposition angle, LiDAR reflectivity of coatings over a range of LiDAR wavelengths will be presented. Several minimum coating reflectance proposals will be evaluated in the context of how they impact color design, NIR functional pigment formulation, and application. Such implications highlight the need for value chain collaboration to optimize industry effort while influencing future regulatory standards.
